tatjana_risto's Journal Hello Steph, Wow what a fascinating poem!! How very typical of you to write a poem based on shopping!! I would have to say that you would make a great poet on that subject!! For everyone else this entry, it is very typical of Steph to talk, walk and do shopping…ha-ha… Shopping to Steph is the new 21st Century religion!! (How cool would that be?) One thing which I really like about your poem is that I could actually envision myself “among the hussle and bussle” of the city. On a busy day in the city (especially when the sales are on), we are surrounded by so many people and don’t often look at the little things around us, as we are constantly pushed and shoved side-to-side my pedestrians. However, we don’t get time to absorb our surroundings. It is signs like the “MYER” is in upper case, that we can focus our attention to!! Interestingly, through the upper case, it does visually look overpowering and dominating among all the pedestrians and shoppers. The colours of the sign (black and white) are bold, also visually creating the overpowering. MYER really makes a statement!! Your poem is simple and very creative…you make shopping sound like a real tropical paradise!! Well done… I couldn’t have put it better myself Current mood: Roselie, I loved your journal!! I think you and i are on the same wavelength...ha-ha… I totally agree with you. What a wonderful poem. I think that Levertov had executed this poem quite well. In today’s society we truly don’t know how to appreciate nature; we take it all for granted. And, it’s the little things like “butterflies” which seems so small and insignificant and symbolises the purity, vivacity, and the colour of life. Interestingly, my parents just came back from a business trip in China, and my mum was telling me that you couldn’t see the sky, there were no parks or nature reserves, and everything is just surrounded by buildings and polluted air. Although it is such a beautiful place, with high-rise buildings, nothing compares to the beautiful variety of fauna and flora in Australia. Many of her colleagues wished that they had the fresh, wide open spaces like we do have in Australia. It is not until to you visit another country, where you learn to appreciate what you have. Current mood: What a fantastic poem... What I particularly enjoyed about this poem was that it was so straight-forward and easy to interpret. Mirikitani’s approach to describing the way the persona’s feelings made me feel empathetic for her, as she was enclosed within herself, and wasn’t able to show her true colours, even to her own daughter. She shows create emotion and expression about breaking the boundaries and the traditions which have enclosed her, from being free. It is evident in this poem that there are a few references to Japanese culture. The persona in the poem evidently shows how her culture has barred her from showing her true identity and personality. The use of the “room” as a metaphor, hence emphasises that she is restrained and feel the “emptiness” within. The poet uses aural words such as “loudness” to accentuate to her conforming, the way she was brought up to be. I also believe that the loudness symbolises her anger within to break free from her guarded life, and I think she resents bringing up her daughter in this type of environment. The use of imperative language of “I want to break tradition” displays how determined she is to break free from her unhappy life. The final line in the poem “She is breaking tradition”, shows that she has stood up for what she has believed in and has begun a new chapter in her life. A well excecuted poem!! Absolutly loved it!! Current mood: What a beautiful poem!! I love how Levertov has used nature in this poem to create a tranquil atmosphere…I found it to be very soothing and relaxing. Also, the description of the butterflies “tremulous movement” shows the liveliness they have within them. The poet uses the colour “white” to symbolize their purity and innocence, which emphasise their liveliness. However, he contrasts this to dead butterflies which turn into a “rock green colour”, which symbolises the “city-lifestyle” we often get polluted with work and appointments, which we don’t stop to appreciate what is around us. Through this poem, Levertov is telling the reader that we shouldn’t take anything for granted, and that we should appreciate with what we have. Current mood: I thought this was another fantastic story which showed another example of how love can be interpreted. When I first read the title of the story it looked quite bland and boring. However, as I began reading it… I began to appreciate how Hemingway showed her perspective on love. Hemingway creatively uses the Elephants to educate the reader to look beyond the surface rather than the exterior. This is great advice when it comes to love and forming a relationship with a person!! I particularly enjoyed this story as it was easy to understand and read along to. The use of dialogue also made it interesting, to have an insight what each characters were thinking. The characters were very simple and normal. There was not great depth of description of the characters, however through the dialogue one could gather that there was tension built up between the characters. The use of short sentences creates a faster pace, as well as emphasise the tension between them. This particular story stuck to me as it really shows the mentality of women when in a relationship. The female in the character feels undermined, and wants her partner to “really love her” and support her. She constantly needs to be reassured of how much her partner really cares for her “Well’ I care about you” (366). It is evident through this quote, that she is a manipulative person. Current mood: My ideas of creative writing have gone KAPUT down the drain. Just as Nemo got flushed down the dunny and ended up in the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. The slushy green seaweed in Queensland is so bright and greens. It looks and smells like licorice. My brain is slowly dying, as the only thing I can think about is sleep. My eyes feel like sheep eyeballs… not that I know what they feel like. I can feel them rolling and spinning around like Kylie Minogue’s hit song “I’m spinning around”. I suddenly feel a gush of heat, like Kylie back up dancers “hot pants”. The Mardi Gras. Hot pants are popular!! A display of bright colours like the sun. This story is going nowhere. No sense of direction… need help! A sudden thought came to mind… could you feed a chicken, chicken? As you can tell my “Leyner Style” story makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. However, this is the random brain process you get when you sit in a 2hour English lecture. What a fantastic Week!! I would have to say that I enjoyed doing the WebCT discussion on the topic love! I found it very insightful and interesting to hear about people’s opinions of love, through their experiences and their interpretations. Through the WebCT discussion, it was a great opportunity to meet new people as well as get to know them on a personal level. After reading some of the discussion summaries, it was very interesting what many of the groups thought of. When the question was raised in the tutorial groups what we thought of love, I thought it was a “load of crap” and “it doesn’t mean anything”. However, it was through these discussions that my attitudes have changed what love is. The texts of Chekhov, Hawthorne, and Maupassant display and interpret different types of love, which broadened my knowledge of what love is… if that makes any sense. One of my group members had summarizes love as; “NOT by definition but by experience”. I would have to agree!! It is unbelievable how much reading is involved in this course!! But it is all good of course… I think!!! Ok I’m back again to give my thoughts of this weeks reading!! Virginia Woolf’s “Kew Gardens” I’ll be honest the first time I’ve ever heard of Virginia Woolf was when Nicole Kidman one an Oscar for her role in the film “The Hours”. Who could forget the hideous nose she had to wear!! Haha I haven’t actually read any of Woolf’s literature. I particularly found this one a bit of a challenge, however I shall give you my thoughts and insights on her story “Kew Gardens” This particular text was quite complex to comprehend and grasp. I had to re-read it a few times until I knew what Woolf was going on about. However, what I managed to pick up what she was saying. Woolf creatively uses visual imagery, of the flowers in the “Kew Garden”, to present one’s role in society. Just as each flower has role in their development and growth, so to does an individual in society. Throughout this story, there is a constant motif of simultaneous actions, of the flowers, dialogue, and the flower’s movement. I think what Woolf is trying to portray is that life may be a little monotonous at times… I think I’m right!! I believe that Woolf’s aim as a writer is to use an abstract point of view to explore and discuss certain issues which are raised in society. It is evident through her short story, that she raises issues of gender (particularly with the women) of how inferior women were considered of particularly in that era she was writing in. I apologize if I have confused anyone!! Ciao everyone! xoxo Hello everyone… Today I’m going to share my thoughts on Walker’s story “Everyday Use” that we have discussed in our tutorial classes last week. I personally found this story a bit boring to be honest; however Walker does display a very important message about culture and heritage to the readers. The title ”Everyday Use” symbolizes that the story itself doesn’t have much excitement or adventure, which doesn’t get the reader hooked into reader the story, which is in fact I found it quite boring!! The setting of this story is set in a normal environment, where normal issues are being raised, which in this case is about culture and heritage. The story is based on a family of three women; Mama, Maggie and Dee, who all portray very different personalities. The story is narrated by the mother in third person. This effectively allows the reader to develop a relationship with and understand her perspective on her views of a realistic and unrealistic paradox. The reader gain empathy towards Maggie (through the Mother’s narration). Maggie is always the one that is being put down by her sister Dee. Her sister Dee, describes her sister, it is only from the exterior. To the reader, Maggie seems like the “ugly duckling”. She doesn’t value her opinions or what she has to offer. It is evident that Dee’s character is very shallow person. This is shown, when Dee would rather hand the quilt on the wall (display her heritage) rather than use and live it. On the other hand, Maggie would rather use the quilts on her bed rather than keep it on display. In the end it is Maggie who develops to be strong individual and believe in her culture, as this is what it has shaped her to be. In conclusion, I found that the message was very valuable in the story, however, the setting of the story was it was too bland and cliché for my liking!! Hello everyone I just had a brain wave!! The movie “Match Point” starring Brian Cox, Mathew Goode, Johnathon Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson is a parallel to Chekhov’s story “The Lady with the dog”. The main protagonist in the film Chris Wilton (Jonathon Rhys Meyers) was always falling out of luck. Until he became friends with a rich guy Tom Hewett (Mathew Goode) and he marries his sister Chole (Emily Moretimer). At this point, his luck begins to change. He receives a great paying job, money, and most of all success. (This is where the lust and love part comes in) He becomes deeply attracted to Tom’s fiancé, which leads him on to obsession where he is forced to make certain decisions that might affect his career and his family. What keeps the audience in suspense is if his luck will ever run out!! Just as Chekhov makes a distinct comparison with lust and love, so do the characters in the movie. I highly recommend this movie as it also broadened the picture between lust and love. Ciao :) |
